Mark Shuttleworth talks about Ubuntu update flaw

Monday, August 28th, 2006

People were up in arms about Ubuntu breaking. Ill admit it did hit me here at work. If I hadn’t already heard what the problem was I might have just formatted the laptop. But people started screaming this idea of releasing patches quickly is a bad thing. I say it is not a bad thing actualy. I would rather have an up to date secure machine, and this is literly the first time Ubuntu broke on me. In over a year, all patches/updates, none caused issues….say that about Windows….

Sundays

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Man they suck.  I got like nothing done and dont really feel too great right now.  Either ate too much or something I ate was bad.  So Im laying in the bed on the laptop watching Surviorman.  I know I have talked about it before, but its one of the best shows out there at its time.  I hole they plan to make more because it really s a great show.  Ive seen every eppiosde now so its rather boring.  This is a great show compared to say…Survior.  Oh well.

They have canceled Stargate SG-1 and I will say that sucks.  Its one of my favorite shows and those are the only ones I make it a point to watch every week.  I know most of tv is going down hill, and most companies are seeing drops because of the prevelance of DVR’s.  What they are going to have to understand is the idea of interuption based commercials are over.  No one with a Tivo or a DVR sits though commercials anymore.  I havent watched a commercial on a show I like, in forever.  This does remind me I need to really get my DVR finished.  Go up to Rod’s and get the HD he is selling me dirt cheap for it.  If dad gets another computer I may get the old one which has tons of hard drive ability…mmmm 8hd’s all LVM’d together or RAID’d yum.  Its a same SG-1 was canceled.  So far there is nothing saying whats going to happen other than most say it wont be the end of it.  Atlantis is picked up and some are saying that the SG-1 cast will likely move over there or part of them.  Battlestar Galatica has been bought by NBC for this October and that does kinda suck.  Wondering what will happen of it because NBC isnt known for doing well with a niche show like it.  So the state of tv is starting to suck more and more
New week…we are launching the new system this week.  We worked our asses off Friday night to update the appliances so thats mostly done.  We will see if we did it right in the morning.  The boss will either say, ok…or you idiot.  Then I gota get to work on the monitoring systems.   I have to do mostly route work to get everything to work.  But all the appliances are being monitored now, but the backend servers, where all the important things are…I gota do something about.  Ok tired of typeing.  Time to roll over a bit.

TreoAlarm

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

You know there are a few things in life that really work well it seems.  One thing that I have a problem with is alarm clocks.  I set no fewer than 3 alarms every night and still could not wake up on time.  My body, like most, is so acustomed to the alarm clock we have it just ignores the loud noises coming at me 6 inches from my head.  So I then put an even louder clock across the room.  That didnt work either.  Know what works…cell phone.  You are trained to wake up at the sound of a ring it seems.  One of my largest complaints is most all cell phones have crappy alarm clocks.  Either they dont give you enough options, or they are totaly non-existant.

I got the Treo 650 from work and was like…where’s the alarm.  Come to find out its hidden in the date/time function…then you have to basicly remember to set it daily…bah.  I went looking around since its Palm based…to find one of the nicest pieces of software…  TreoAlarm.  I dont know how I could go without this piece of software now.  I set up the normal weekly alarms to go off at 6am every morning with a loud ring like is my normal phone ring…wakes me up in a few seconds flat.  It has a nice large snooze button ;) who doesnt love those.  And you can even crank the sound up to ear piercing levels.

This isnt a one trick pony either.  During the day, you also have at your fingertips an up to date weather program.  Easy to configure, easy to update, and even automaticly can go out and get the latest forcast for you.  Its a clean interface, its fast on the 650, and it does everything you want, nothing you dont.  If you have a Treo 600 or 650…its one of those must have programs in my humble opinion TreoAlarm.

Lets see

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Not a lot really going on.  I finaly got the NX2000 from Calum.  I need to get an exhaust put on it before I can get it tagged here in Davidson County.  Probably could use some muffler tape to patch it for the moment, which I may do, to just get it tested and see if I can pass inspection.  Working new 7-4 hours now.  I do love those hours because I can get to the gym and home before its too late.  Yea waking up before 6am can be a pain, but its worth it.  Back at the gym pretty reguarly I think, definatly need to work on that a bit.  Gota convince Chris to join I think.  If I had a person to lift with Id definatly push myself further.  Got the MythTV machine working to a mostly functioning status.  Have to play with it a bit, but I have little drive to get it working total since I dont watch all that much tv anyway.  It would be nice to hook up to the tv to watch my videos on the tv, but dont even know if Id do that all that often.  Hmm, dont know….nothing else going on.  Just doing my day to day stuff.  Trying to find stuff to do on the weekends, and this summer is basicly over with….wow.
